A mold infestation in the home is dreaded by homeowners and a deterrent for home buyers. Aside from the unsightly appearance and the damage that mold can bring to your home and possessions, it is also bad for your health.

It’s smart to make an effort to prevent mold growth in your home instead of waiting for it to become a problem. Here are some easy steps you can take.

1. Use Your Exhaust Fans to Prevent Mold Growth In the Home

Most bathrooms and kitchens have a built-in exhaust fan. Its purpose is to ventilate the space when heat and moisture are generated from activities like showering and cooking. Always remember to turn the exhaust fan on when going through your daily routine to prevent mold growth in the home. If you do not have an exhaust fan, crack a window. It’s also a good idea to place a portable dehumidifier in the bathroom and run it as needed.

2. Fix Plumbing Leaks

Because moisture leads to mold growth, having a plumbing leak can result in a mold infestation if not addressed. Check cabinets under sinks and make sure there are no signs of leaks coming from the pipes. The signs include water stains on the wood or moisture on the outside of the pipes.

Inspect the condition of your washer hoses. Over time, they can become brittle and cracked, causing leaks. They should be replaced periodically to avoid leaks and prevent mold growth in the home. You can also reduce your water pressure and install a water softener to reduce stress on your plumbing pipes and prevent plumbing leaks.

3. Clean Shower Curtains and Bathroom Tiles

Another way to prevent mold growth in the home is to regularly clean your shower curtain and shower tiles with a mold inhibiting cleaner. Shower curtains and tiles harbor moisture which can easily lead to mold growth. By keeping these areas clean and dry, mold will not be able to grow.

4. Get a Dehumidifier

While we mentioned using a portable dehumidifier above, another option is to invest in a whole house dehumidifier that attaches to the HVAC system. This is an effective way to prevent mold in the home by keeping the humidity levels low. Mold needs humidity to thrive, so by eliminating humidity, your home becomes a less favorable environment for mold growth.
